Hate Marketing; Love What You Do?

It’s a sentiment I hear a lot –

Why do I have to do all this marketing; why can’t I just do what I love….?

What you mean, I think, is that you love what you do – your expertise, what you’re good at, and you want to do this as much of the time as you can.

But Then, There’s This Marketing Stuff…

It’s somehow separate, something that takes you away from doing what you’re good at, what you love to do.

And then maybe you tell yourself that when you’ve made it to a certain level, you won’t have to do marketing; people will just know about you. It’s as if marketing is some kind of unpleasant medicine you need to take when your business is young but that you will grow out of.

Well, maybe…

But let me ask you this. Who do you get the most emails from? Who do you see advertising on TV the most? Is it the brands and businesses that are not yet successful and are still making a name for themselves, or is it the guys at the top who are growing or want to keep market share?

Do you see adverts from Nike, from Apple? And do you get emails from the big guns in your industry? Of course you do!

Marketing Is Here to Stay

So, learn to love it because marketing your business is here to stay and will be part of your business success for as long as you’re in business.

Yes, I know that those of us who consider ourselves experts first, rather than marketers, might not always embrace it as a core skill. It might not be the first thing that drives us when we get up in the morning. It probably isn’t why you set up your business in the first place.

But I can be certain that the difference between your success, and the speed of your success will more than likely come down to how well you market your business. How you spend your time, energy and money and what returns you get.

So if you feel like you’re an expert who has to endure marketing for the sake of the business then here are a few tips to help you learn to love it:

  1. Time or money? Pretty much everything you do will come down to one or the other. Do you want to pay for advertising, or can you spend your time on social media? Decide which is your most precious resource and plan marketing activities that don’t eat away at it – whether that’s your time or your money.
  2. Do what you enjoy – well at least most of the time! Don’t start a blog if you hate to write. Make sure the marketing strategy you pick is something you’re able to stick at.
  3. Find an expert. There’s nothing like enthusiasm from someone else to instil enthusiasm in you. So get some expert advice from someone who loves their subject so much that their enthusiasm rubs off on you!
  4. Be aware of your mindset. the way you think will affect what you do. Learn to create a a positive mindset around marketing – after all you have a great product or service, all you’re doing is communicating that message!

    I don’t enjoy marketing probably because i’m really not on board with social media. It’s a nice distraction, but it’s getting more and more junked up with extraneous marketing messages. For example, Twitter is almost like tuning into a TV channel that is almost solely advertising.

    I love my business, I love what I do, I love public speaking, and writing and teaching, but marketing seems like no real return for the effort, MASSIVE effort for what? 2 or 3 clients? I have a great line of products, and a good copywriter, but that doesn’t seem to be enough. But I guess that’s just it. A copywriter is not a marketing specialist.

    Marketing is not something I “get to put off once I’ve made it”. That would be foolish. Marketing is something I will hire an incredible genius to handle once I have the money to afford him/her.

      Hi Caitlyn, thanks for joining the debate :)

      It sounds like you’ve found your marketing sweet spot with the speaking? I know a lot of coaches who build their whole career on that method so if that’s what you love then stick with it and do as much of it as you can… I totally agree the best strategy is to add on and outsource other methods as you grow.

    @Caitlyn…We all are marketing every minute of everyday when we passionately describing what we do to people around us unless of course you never discuss what you do with anyone ;) Social Media is just an amplifier from one-to-one word of mouth to one-to-many.
    I agree with @cathyp that you are just employing a different marketing medium and if it is working for you then all the power to you…
